Beard shaved in Eurovision protest

Singer Conchita Wurst won the Eurovision Song Contest for Austria (AP)

A Russian blogger has shaved off his beard in protest that a drag act from Austria won the Eurovision Song Contest.

Conchita Wurstat made waves when she stormed to victory dressed as a woman but with a full facial beard.

For Valentin Korobkov, from the Siberian city of Chita, this meant that having a beard was no longer cool, and in Moscow some people agree with him.

Last year Russian president Vladimir Putin issued stringent "anti-gay propaganda" laws, causing uproar across parts of Europe and prompting acts of protest at the Winter Olympics.

And it seems yet again Russian opinion contrasts sharply with European gay rights. Certainly, Conchita Wurstat has no shortage of fans in her native Austria.

She is due to perform next at a drag queen festival in Vienna.
