A US off-duty police officer has been hailed a hero after returning to a burning petrol forecourt to rescue a stricken driver after his car crashed into the pump.
New York State Police officer John Vescio was filling his own vehicle in White Plains, north of New York City, when a second car collided with the pump, which burst into flames.
The officer ran for safety, but noticed the unconscious driver was still inside his vehicle, and returned to pull him out.
The fire then spread to engulf the petrol station.
Local reports suggested the driver had lost control of the car when he went into diabetic shock.
