A pair of scarecrows have been carved into a maze to celebrate the launch of a new book from the creators of The Gruffalo.

The design, cut out of a 10-acre maize field, recreates the front cover of The Scarecrows' Wedding, written by author Julia Donaldson and illustrated by Axel Scheffler.

Main characters, scarecrows Betty O'Barley and Harry O'Hay, can be seen from the skies above the maze, which has been carved at the National Forest Adventure Farm in Burton-on-Trent, Staffordshire.

Visitors to the maze will be able to lose themselves in three miles of pathways, bridges and viewing towers.

The Scarecrows' Wedding, which goes on sale on July 17, tells the tale of Betty and Harry, who are planning the perfect wedding when another scarecrow tries to ruin their special day.

Now in its eleventh year, the annual maize maze at the farm has in the past featured the Three Lions logo to celebrate 150 years of the FA, and an image of Usain Bolt, to mark the London Olympics in 2012.

The maze opens to the public on July 12.
