Sandwich-making record on the menu
Lunch fans in Salford are hoping they have managed to break the world record for the largest number of people making a sandwich at the same time.
Some 607 sandwich-makers gathered to each make a sandwich in five minutes, and hopefully set a new record, as part of celebrations for British Sandwich Week.
The tentative new world record more than doubled the previous total, set by food chain Subway, but still needs to be verified.
Each participant had five minutes to butter bread, insert their choice of filling, add mayonnaise and pack away into a lunch box. The event was part of a Love Lunch campaign that encourages people to take daily lunch breaks.
Jim Winship, director of the British Sandwich Association, said: "We wanted to do something for British Sandwich Week that would kick the week off and make a bit of noise for us, and we thought this would be a good idea.
"The last record was done by Cafe Rouge who did something back in March and we thought we can't have them doing it, we ought to do it ourselves and do something higher than that.
"Sandwiches are a big business in this country so it's something we want to shout about. The important thing is it brings the entire industry together."
