A US state senator is proposing a bounty on sea otters.
Senator Bert Stedman sees the creatures as a threat to shellfish beds in Alaska.
Mr Stedman has introduced legislation that would have the state pay 100 US dollars for each sea otter lawfully killed under the US federal Marine Mammal Protection Act.
He said he is not talking about eradication but slowing the population growth.
A US Fish and Wildlife Service spokesman said the bill, if it were to pass, would be unenforceable under the federal law.
