Dupont bosses have paid tribute to their workforce in Londonderry as they
marked the 20th anniversary of producing Kevlar.
Plant manager Tom Bollaert, who moved to Derry from Belgium last year, said
production was "24/7" at the Maydown facility, which employs 185
staff, working on 12-hour shift patterns.
Kevlar is produced as a yarn, stronger than steel wire, and has enjoyed a
wide range of applications from cars to space ships.
Guests at an anniversary ceremony were shown first hand how it was
manufactured in Derry.
Mr Bollaert said production in Derry had expanded five-fold since Kevlar was
first made in the city two decades ago.
Kevlar is used in many applications, especially for providing protection to
armed services through armoured vests or in reinforcing ehicles, like Land
Rovers, which could be hit by roadside bombs.
