Balmoral Show Day 1: Full results and pictures

First day generates an electric atmosphere despite power failure

By Rachel Martin

The atmosphere was electric at the Balmoral Show as tens of thousands of visitors made the most of the weather and headed to Lisburn for Northern Ireland's flagship agricultural event.

But it could have been a different story as the event narrowly dodged disaster when the showgrounds' mains power supply failed for around two-and-a-half hours. The power failure could have been catastrophic.

But organisers were able to seamlessly switch around half of the show's electricity on to generators.

Public address systems were down in parts of the showgrounds, and some traders experienced an interruption to supply, but most visitors didn't seem to notice.

The show's operations director Rhonda Geary explained that the fault to the mains supply was caused by work carried out in a housing estate near the Blaris Road showgrounds.

Earlier this week organisers said they were hoping the four-day event would allow them to smash all previous visitor number records.

But the outage meant that digital scanners were unable to register the numbers of visitors for part of the day.

These were counted manually and will be tallied later in the week.

However, organisers suggested that the first day numbers seemed to be on a par with the year before.

Ms Geary said she was still hopeful for a record attendance.

"There have been a lot of cars in and the crowd has been steady through the day and things have certainly been busy on the main routes, which is always a good sign," she added.

Royal Ulster Agricultural Society chief executive Colin McDonald said: "We had been worried - not me personally - that we might have four days' costs and three days' attendance, but that doesn't seem to be the case."

It's not the only quick change of plan that had to be implemented - this year avian flu restrictions meant the show's poultry sections had to be cancelled.

Organisers used the extra space as an opportunity for a display informing the public about the disease and why, despite the extra precautions, it's still safe to eat chicken meat.
