The old style phone boxes may have been red, but the new BT phone kiosks could be likened to Dr Who’s Tardis because of the extra space dimensions provided inside.

BT Payphones, in conjunction with advertising partners Clear Channel NI, have introduced this new public phone booth in Northern Ireland.

The new units will replace a number of existing kiosks, leading to less street clutter, less potential for vandalism and easier wheel chair access.

BT said Northern Ireland has 1,650 street based kiosks and 75 of the new ‘Connect 6’ payphone booths will be installed over the next three years with the first already unveiled in Royal Avenue, Belfast.

Peter Morris, BT director of corporate services, commented: “BT is very conscious of its social obligations and continues to balance the commercial pressures of maintaining the public payphone service along with meeting the needs of those in remote and rural communities.

“BT has worked together with Clear Channel NI to provide the public with an innovative call box, that will not only be functional in use but also space saving and visually exciting.”

Inside? What inside, there isn't even a door! Why would anyone even use one when everyone seems to have a mobile, or at least access to one. The money invested on this should have been invested in homeless shelters and services.
