BT rolls out super-fast broadband

Monday, 23 March 2009

Belfast is among 29 locations across the UK to be given access to super-fast broadband on the BT network next year, it was announced today.

Close to 30,000 customers in the Balmoral exchange area in the south of the city are among the first to benefit from the roll-out of the new fibre-based network.

BT said it would be installing fibre-based broadband in the exchange early next year as part of a £1.5bn project.

Chris Clark, BT chief executive, said: “Super-fast broadband is essential to Northern Ireland's future as a knowledge-based economy so it is excellent to announce Balmoral exchange in this initial set of 29 locations.

“Once again, Northern Ireland is at the forefront of one of the most important projects to take place in recent years and this investment programme offers us the prospect of joining the world super league for broadband speeds.”

The ‘fibre to the cabinet' technology will offer speeds which are more than 10 times those obtainable by most households in the country.

Brian, perhaps you shouldn't live in the middle of nowhere! Perhaps you'll also expect a hospital to be built next door. Economics rules the world or haven't you discovered that yet?
I've always found the BT service to be 100% reliable unlike so many of the others.

I live on the outskirts of Lisburn, which according to BT will be upgraded to the full speed service in the future. I was first told this 2 years ago. I'm still paying the full price for a sub standard service

I live in Tyrone and BT can't provide my neighbours or myself with "conventional" broadband because we are too far away from the BT exchange, this despite the fact BT were given a large grant to provide 100% broadband access across Northern Ireland in 2004, a promise they are failing to deliver on some 5 years later. Obviously it's not cost-effective for them to provide us with broadband, but they did take the grant and they do like to quote 100% broadband access when it suits them,
