Car firms fear lack of skills

Urgent action is needed to tackle an impending skills shortage if the UK is to remain one of Europe's most attractive locations for car manufacturers, according to a new report.

A study by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) found that companies have built reputations for quality and engineering excellence. Automotive companies based in the UK now export to more than 150 countries, which is regarded as a positive factor for the sector's future. But the report, compiled by KPMG, warned that the prospect of a shortage of skilled workers poses a big threat.
