China needs reform to support growth: report

The World Bank and a team of Chinese researchers said Beijing needs to make sweeping changes to reduce the government's role in the economy if it is to keep growing steadily and avoid crises.

Yesterday's recommendations are in line with pledges in the Communist Party's latest five-year development plan to promote market-style reform.

But their advice is likely to clash with factions that favour state industry.
