Electronics firm plans to cut workforce by 92

Thursday, 18 December 2008

Coleraine electronics firm AVX has announced plans to shed 92 jobs from its Northern Ireland workforce.

Japanese-owned AVX, which supplies parts to the electronics market, currently employs 390 people at its factory in Coleraine.

“During the last two months, this location has seen a stepped reduction in orders due to global slowdown and as a result is announcing this reduction in the workforce,” a spokesman said.

“The company very much regrets having to make these proposals, and do not underestimate the affect it will have on their workforce at this time.”

AVX is also planning a two-week shutdown of its plant over the Christmas holidays. The company said it will consult with employees affected by the proposals and their representatives.

Richard Brewster (37) has worked at the company for 14 years and said the future for workers is uncertain.

“It is a very, very worrying time. My wife also works at the company and so we are reliant on two incomes from the company.

“We don’t know what the future is. It is very uncertain as to what will happen in the next coming months with a change in shift patterns and possibly more jobs going.”

AVX is the latest in a string of local manufacturers to announce job cuts as they begin to feel the pinch from the economic downturn. Carrickfergus-based car parts maker Ryobi announced it will be reducing its workforce by 99 earlier this week.

Coleraine Alliance Councillor Barney Fitzpatrick has expressed his shock at AVX’s plans to shed jobs.

“I am extremely worried about the impact this news will have on the local economy in Coleraine,” said Mr Fitzpatrick.

“This announcement is a real body blow to the town. The knock-on effects of such a potential loss of employment would be devastating for the wider area.

“Given that Christmas is fast approaching, this news could not have come at a worse time for those who may be affected.

“We need to see the relevant Stormont Ministers doing all they can to maintain these posts and put in place support to minimise the problems facing employees,” he said.
