Another local firm has tapped into the burgeoning market for iPhone applications by developing the first GAA-related product for the Apple device.

Warrenpoint-based Statzpack has launched a statistics service that allows GAA clubs to set up and record team stats for all panels, players and grades — allowing every game to be analysed and stored at a secure website.

Like other iPhone “apps” the system is provided as a service rather than a separate software application you buy as a one off and use on a PC or PDA.

“We have trialled it with schools, county level teams and clubs. We took the measure to recruit the input and expertise from coaches and players, past and present at all levels — but especially at grassroots. We have listened carefully to those who have given give a lot of their time to the game.” said Mark Roberts, director at Statzpack.

“We quickly discovered that it was not enough to be able to add your stats via our website. Though this method works well for of our users, and allows coaches to transfer stats recorded on paper onto the system, the iPhone application allows you to stand pitch-side and add them as they happen.”

The company is offering the application free to its members and users with an iPhone or iPod touch can download the application from iTunes.

Statzpack is not the only local firm to spot an opportunity in the iPhone market.

Last week North Antrim digital media company Awakin announced it had developed an iPhone application based on the story of renowned motorcycle road racers Joey Dunlop, Mervyn Robinson, Frank Kennedy and Jim Dunlop — known as the Armoy Armada.

Awakin’s application uses video and interactive maps to bring alive the story of the 1970s sporting heroes and was released as part of the build up to the inaugural Armoy Road Race on August 8.
