Seventy-five jobs are to be lost at a Co Donegal meat processing factory as it moves part of its operation north of the border.
Politicians in the county have condemned the decision of Donegal Meats in the border village of Carrigans to closes its boning plant and transfer the operation to a sister plant in Derry or Tyrone.
The Carrigans factory, which employs more than 200 workers, is owned by the Foyle Food Group and also has operations in nearby Derry, Omagh and Cookstown.
The transfer follows the failure of discussions between the company and union SIPTU aimed at agreeing to savings at its Donegal plant.
Union representatives from SIPTU say the workers are already on low pay and cannot afford the ‘savage’ pay-cuts of 10% proposed by the company.
Donegal County councillor Frank McBrearty Jr said: “We are probably the most underfunded county in Ireland and once again one of the last remaining industries here is taking a knock.
“Donegal has nearly 21,000 people out of work at the moment and we need to be retaining jobs, not giving them away.
“The Carrigans-St Johnstown area has been badly hit by unemployment and this latest news will only heap more misery on the area.
“This is a further indictment of the neglect of this government of the people of Donegal.”
Martin O'Rourke, of SIPTU Letterkenny, described the company's decision as ‘extremely disappointing’.
Mr O'Rourke said while there had been some offers of redeployment within the wider Foyle Group, he believed the opportunities were limited.
