To facilitate a Sunday afternoon train journey to see our mother, my younger brother and I arranged to meet for lunch at 1pm in Belfast's Botanic Avenue area.
We debated on the phone whether to go to Rainbow or Boojum, but on arrival, neither was open, so after a quick scan of the surrounding area we popped across the road to Carlito's.
We hadn't eaten at the Italian restaurant and pizzeria before, but it looked welcoming and we were sold on the idea of a three-course meal for just £9.95. Six different dishes were ordered and we agreed to share everything, except the bill that is. He'll get it next time... The chicken tempura strips with sweet chilli sauce and a portion of sauteed mushrooms, with chillies, mozzarella and tomatoes was a great way to start our meal.
The chicken caesar wrap with pancetta and cos lettuce that followed was tasty, as was the goats cheese ciabatta, with tomato salsa and basil pesto.
My only gripe was the bread on the latter was a little tough and the goats cheese was crowned with a disproportionate amount of rocket. Both generous mains were served with chunky chips and salad. The creamy tiramisu and sticky toffee pudding for dessert were the perfect sweet treats to end our good value Italian feast.
