Londonderry will this weekend play host to a conference devoted to the internet, digital media and new technologies.

Organised by the local digital media community, the informal BarCamp Derry event will bring together more than 120 business people, students and people involved in the digital industry for a day of networking, workshops and product demonstrations.

BarCamp takes place at the University of Ulster’s Magee campus on Saturday from 9am to 5pm and is open to anyone.

Mark Nagurski, one of the organisers, said: “All the presentations and workshops are run by Northern Irish people who are either involved in web businesses or are developing new technologies. This grass roots approach makes BarCamp the perfect opportunity for business people, students and anyone else to learn about the web and new technologies in a relaxed environment.”

“Attendees will be able to hear from a range of speakers on everything from iPhone applications to social media. People are invited to come and go as they please.”

Investment and Enterprise Development officer for Derry City Council, Matt Peachey, said the event would showcase the growing digital community in Derry and the North West

“Derry City Council is committed to growing the digital content sector in the city and building on the successes of local businesses,” he said.

Janice Tracey, chief executive of Londonderry Chamber of Commerce, added that the organisation had identified digital content as an industry with major potential to create new businesses and new jobs in the area.

“It's also vital that local businesses make the most of the online tools available to them. We'd urge all interested businesses to take this opportunity to learn and connect with practitioners from across the region,” she said.
