Ryanair plans online check-in charge

Thursday, 14 May 2009

Ryanair passengers face a £5 charge per flight to print out their tickets at home as part of moves to abolish check-in desks and increase revenues.

The policy replaces Ryanair's practice of offering free online ticketing and charging anyone who opted for face-to-face check-in £10.

In future, anyone who arrives at the airport without a pre-printed check-in card will have to pay a £40 "boarding card re-issue fee". In-built restrictions to the online ticketing system mean many customers will be unable to print their tickets when they book, raising the chances for penalty charges from customers who think they have completed the process.

Ryanair says its system won't allow customers booking more than 15 days before their flight, or within four hours of one, to check in at that time. so those who book farther in advance will have to revisit the website nearer the time of their trip to check in.

The EU has forced Ryanair to change the way it lists the costs of its tickets to include taxes and some – but not all – fees up front. Advertised "free" tickets can still end up costing £20 to £80. For example, Ryanair adds £10 or more to each round-trip ticket if it is purchased with normal credit or debit cards, making the charge almost impossible to avoid, but this cost is omitted from the initial price.

The airline defends this practice because it offers free booking to holders of a restrictive, ill-marketed Visa Electron card that is unavailable in major countries.

I agree with te comments of many others here that Michael O'leary is in danger of killing off the golden goose. Booking and travelling with Ryanair has now become so stressful that I for one have decided to now disown them. The final straw was on a recent trip from EMA..where people were being told at the gate that there Duty Free purchases had to be packed inside their carry on bags. Most passengers of course were unable to comply so the purchases were abandoned. The man's a fool !

Its time people stood up to these people. When is it going to stop. I will never take a Ryanair flight, people should vote with their flights, and go elsewhere.

I don't like all I read about RyanAir so I would never dream of
giving them business. It's not worth the aggravation. The nerve of them thinking of charging money to use the washroom is simply
appalling in this day and age.

Crazy, he is getting rid of the desk check in clerks, i would have thought that to be a large saving, i also smell the fumes,...arriv at the airport and you are told that your ticket cannot be vaildated, due to the clour of the paper, and the old chestnut for relieving you of more cash, ----you ticket is not security cleared--- buy another one, if you want on this flight, sorry sir, madam... we cannot refund your flight....

So to clarify, on top of £4 per person per journey, if you don't pay by Electron, and £5 to print off boarding card per journey. That means before you even consider the fare, taxes and baggage, the journey will be at least £18 return!!

Crazy... I never use Ryanair!!

every time i read about ryanair and their charges it makes me think they are pricing them selves out of bussiness. I would not use that airline and i do have the opportunity to do so this summer. We are being charged enough with all air lines for fuel charges baggage and all the hidden extra's. No wonder more people are staying home a good thing to see more of your own country.

When will the unions goverment and the ordinary people stand up to Micheal O'leary. What about people who dont have a PC or elderly people who are a scared to use them plus he wants to charge £40.00 if you forget your online check in also £100.00 to change a name online or £150.00 to change it on the telephone the list goes on with this so called cheap airline . i have used ryan air on numerous occassions and i can tell you that if they can charge you for any thing they will. on one occassion i booke a flight for 14 people and one of the lads was his first time from home, i asked for his second name and he gave me his middle name. to retify this at dublin airport i had to pay 100 euro just to change his name. they were also talking about charging for using the toilet on the plane...unfortunately they are still cheaper than any of their rivals.

Ryanair lures you in with 'cheap' tickets and the moment they have you, they squeeze you for every penny you have. Their business model relies on mandatory fees and penalties and then act all innocent and holier-than-thou.. I for one will never fly with Ryanair again, ever. I'd rather give my money to another airline or a discount airline like Easyjet, who at least try to treat their customers like human beings.
