Dunmurry church with care home permission on market for £300k

A 150-year-old former Presbyterian church in Co Antrim, with planning permission to become a supported living apartment complex, has gone on the market for £300,000.

The building on Ashley Park was once Dunmurry Presbyterian Church and has been listed for sale along with a two acre park and a semi-detached house.

Permission has already been granted for a change of use for the church, nine supported apartments and a 54-bed care home for the elderly and mentally ill.

The church was built in 1863 and extended in 1903, when two vestibules, the spire and the ornate brickwork on the outside were also thought to have been added.

In 2006, the church's congregation voted to sell the church building and move across the road to its new premises on the Glenburn Road - one of the biggest decisions in the history of Dunmurry's Presbyterian community.

Lisa McAteer, CBRE director, said she expected demand would be high for the property, given its price and location.

She said: "Dunmurry has excellent public transport networks, with a regular train and bus service running through the town to Belfast, Lisburn, Newry and Craigavon.

"With growing demand for more residential developments in the much-desired south Belfast area, the site, which has a stunning church building currently located on it, has recently had a planning report carried out.

"This report indicated that the current church building may be suitable for conversion to residential development."

It comes as a number of church buildings have recently come up for sale, including the former Chapel of the Resurrection on the Antrim Road, north Belfast, which hit the market at £1.35m in March. The price includes 3.2 acres, with planning permission for housing.

The church was designed by Lanyon, Lynn & Lanyon in 1868. The chapel is to be converted into three apartments and planning permission is in place for a further six detached houses, seven town houses and 15 apartments.

And two years ago JD Wetherspoon bought a former Methodist Church on University Street, south Belfast - which the chain hopes to turn into a pub.
