The high calibre of locally-based craftsmen remains a competitive advantage for Northern Ireland firms

Tuesday, 20 September 2011

We ask Les McCracken how Northern Ireland's trade industries are returning to growth

From builders to joiners and plumbers, the dramatic as well as rapid collapse of the construction sector has had a severe effect on all trade industries in Northern Ireland. That has been a bitter pill for a region well-known for producing an exceptional skills-base and industrial innovations.

The challenge has been to stabilise the order book but many firms are now regaining confidence and looking beyond traditional markets to reinforce strengths and build for the future. There has been an urgency to rediscover, develop and foster the type of entrepreneurial spirit and 'can do' attitude that helped to fuel confidence only a few years ago. The high calibre of locally-based master craftsmen and an ability to quickly meet customer needs remains a competitive advantage for Northern Ireland firms willing to challenge larger competitors for lucrative contracts beyond the usual horizons.

Having been among the first to feel the cold wind of recession, McCue Fit-Out has worked hard to secure opportunities outside of our comfort zone. In the last two years we've refocused on a number of growth markets in Great Britain and Europe to rebuild the core business around innovative solutions and quality customer service.

Like many companies, McCue has had to be more competitive and flexible with our pricing levels, but at the same time we haven't let that affect the quality of delivery that we give our customers. In fact, during this time we've become established as the specialist of choice for many leading brands including Urban Outfitters, White Stuff, Starbucks, Wagamama, KFC and DW Sport Fitness.

Our company now employs around 100 staff locally but we are not complacent and, like Northern Ireland plc, continue to face challenges in growing our business. Increasing competition makes it essential that we remain ambitious and confident to challenge in new markets and secure continued success.
