Chief executive, Pubs of Ulster
Is the glass half full or half empty?
Hey, I’m alive, so the glass is always half full. I remember greeting an elderly gentlemen when out walking one morning with the usual “Good morning.” He responded: “Yes it is — you know it’s a good morning when you don’t hit your head on your coffin.” A wise man!
Culture vulture, sports fanatic or petrol head?
I’m a petrol head when it comes to what I drive but I enjoy culture, although for me that’s actually going out, meeting people and sharing their culture rather than the arts.
Blockbuster, romcom, thriller, musical?
I particularly like films based on actual events and my favourite film has to be Invictus, an incredible story about an incredible man. I defy anyone to watch this movie and not feel moved. Besides, there was popcorn!
Fiction or non-fiction?
I quite like science fiction as an escape but in the main it’s non-fiction, especially biographies.
I love to gather information about interesting people that I can recite and try to look intelligent.
Holidays at home or away?
I am an avid traveller so for me it’s away, although there is nothing like coming back home after a few weeks of overland travel.
My favourite country outside of Northern Ireland is...
Easily Cambodia, or more accurately the people of Cambodia. They may not be materially rich but they are one of the most welcoming and giving people I’ve ever experienced.
The most dangerous thing I've ever done is...
Touching the TV remote without asking my wife’s permission!
Actually I don’t know if this would be classed as dangerous or just stupid but as a non-swimmer (long story) it’s Hydro boarding in a grade five whitewater river, which I did almost every weekend for a number of years.
I couldn't live without....
My mobile phone and obviously my wife Karen (well, she might read this!)
If I didn’t do my current job I’d be...
Unemployed. It was hard enough blagging this job and I’m still expecting someone to find out I only called in to the Pubs of Ulster Office for directions.
What I enjoy most about being in business is...
First and foremost I’m a people person and my work gives me the opportunity to work within various arenas with lots of interesting people.
