Co Down-based solar panels company Blue Build Energy has been fined £2,000 for misleading two customers.

The firm was found guilty at Newtownards Magistrates Court after a Trading Standards probe.

A couple in Bangor complained they were mis-sold a photovoltaic system, which was to cost £152 a month for 10 years.

They were persuaded to sign up after the salesman told them they would only have to pay for the first three months before the system became self-funding.

However, that turned out to be incorrect and the first income from the system did not come for 10 months. Even then, it was not enough to cover the payments.

Trading Standards spokesman Kevin McNamara said the case involved the mis-selling of expensive items.

"There is a lot of detailed information for consumers to take on board before coming to a decision, so it is important that they are not misled in respect of the information given," he added.
