Derry firm buys Topaz home-heating

By Rachel Martin

Co Londonderry firm Nicholl Fuel Oils Group is to take over Topaz Energy’s home-heating oil arm in Northern Ireland.

Topaz operates 49 petrol forecourts here.

However, the sale only involves the home-heating part of the business.

With over 444 sites, Topaz is Ireland’s largest service station and fuel brand.

Nicholl Oils was founded more than 50 years ago and has grown to become Northern Ireland’s largest independent oil distributor.

The southern arm of the home-heating business will be taken over by Capital Oil Supplies, a fuel distribution business based in Dublin.

Topaz’s home-heating business employs 55 staff, including 35 based in Northern Ireland, all of whom will transfer to the new owners.

The sum paid for the business has not been disclosed.

It comes around two years after Topaz was acquired by Canadian group Alimentation Couche-Tard.

Greysteel-based family-run  company Nicholl Oils employs almost 200 people.

Nicholls also owns fuel distribution firms Oil Trans, Fleet Diesel and Berngar as well as Web Oil and Brobot Fuels in England and Wales.

The acquisition is the latest deal in the energy sector in Northern Ireland after LCC Group, based in Cookstown, bought the Cloghan Point Oil Terminal in Co Antrim from AES.
