Drinks firm laps up contract to supply massive US retail chain

By Clare Weir

A Co Armagh drinks company has won new business in America which could be worth up to £250,000.

The Classic Mineral Water Company in Lurgan is supplying sparkling water and a range of flavoured waters to Big Lots of Columbus, Ohio, one of the biggest US retail chains.

Founded in 1948, the firm employs 30 people in Lurgan processing soft drinks and mineral waters, including a seven-strong range of flavoured waters.

The firm remains a family-owned and managed business and exports to Saudi Arabia and Cyprus and otheEurope.

Thomas Morgan, Classic Mineral's sales manager, said that winning business from a corporation of the size of Big Lots is a "marvellous boost".

"Big Lots has a network of 1,400 stores in 47 US states and recently acquired a business in Canada," he said.

"What appealed to them was the essential provenance and Irish heritage of both our sparkling and flavoured waters," said Mr Morgan.
