Former England footballer Gary Lineker has helped start-up insurance firm Neos score a £1 million investment boost.

The Match of the Day host joined a group of investors including former RSA Insurance managing director Steve Broughton and Barry Smith, former chief executive of Ageas, in raising the seed funding.

The fundraising values Neos, which describes itself as the UK's first-ever connected home insurance service, at £8.4 million.

The group combines connected home technology, 24/7 monitoring and emergency assistance alongside home insurance from its lead underwriting partner, Hiscox.

Neos has been in development for the past 12 months and plans a full market launch in early 2017.

Mr Smith, who is also Neos chairman, said: "I'm delighted to have invested in and joined the talented and experienced Neos team at this very early stage.

"This is an exciting time for the home insurance market as we start to see new customer value propositions that embrace connected home technology."

Other investors include Richard King, founder of ingenie, and Eos Venture Partners.

Neos was co-founded by chief executive Matt Poll and technology chief Krystian Zajac in 2015.
