A union has attacked the award of a knighthood to the former head of a private equity firm which was involved in a series of disputes when it owned the AA.

Damon Buffini, formerly of Permira, was given the honour for voluntary and charitable services.

But the GMB union said it made a mockery of the honours system.

The union was embroiled in rows over redundancies and the treatment of disabled workers after Permira took over the motoring organisation.

GMB official Paul Maloney said: "He put thousands of workers on the dole and left disabled people feeling worthless.

"He did more harm than good and the AA is still in turmoil, so why is he being rewarded?"
