Economy Minister Simon Hamilton has said he’ll close down an incentive scheme for small onshore wind projects this week. The decision followed a consultation into shutting the schemes, after their large-scale counterparts were shut from April 1.

Mr Hamilton said: “I intend to bring legislation to the Assembly to close the Northern Ireland Renewables Obligation (NIRO) to new small scale onshore wind and existing small scale generating stations adding additional capacity before the end of June if Assembly timelines permit.”

The Minister said that around 93% of respondents to the consultation said they approved of the timing of closure.

Solicitor Andrew Ryan, a specialist in energy at law firm TLT, said the move by Mr Hamilton was a “welcome confirmation”.
