Hughes Insurance has announced it plans to take on 17 new staff following a £2m investment at its Newtownards headquarters.

The company said the posts come after steady growth over the last few years which, it claims, means it now insures one in five drivers in Northern Ireland and is the largest independent insurance provider. It's already taken on 38 employees until the end of May after doubling the size of the existing premises in Newtownards.

The announcement was made at the opening of the new facility and chairman Leslie Hughes said the company is targeting 25% market share by 2012.

"Our employment projections dictate that we may need to cater for up to 150 new employees in the imminent future," he said.

Mr Hughes and his wife Jackie started the company in 1977 from their house on North Street in the town. It now employs 240 people at 12 locations throughout Northern Ireland.
