Medical manufacturer in running for top UK award

By Clare Weir

A Coleraine company's product has gone up against household names including Dyson, Range Rover and Custard Creams for the nationwide Made by Britain award.

Armstrong Medical, manufacturers and suppliers of products for use in anaesthesia and critical care, has been chosen to represent the East Londonderry area as part of a national award designed to highlight the best of British manufacturing and industry.

Constituency MP, Gregory Campbell nominated the firm's AMSORB® PLUS as an admirable representative of industry in the region. The product is used during anaesthesia to absorb the patient's carbon dioxide CO2 safely. It is unable to produce toxins harmful to humans when in contact with commonly used anaesthetic agents.

Armstrong Medical's managing director, John Armstrong said that the nomination is important, not just for the company but also the country.

"Quality is our top priority. It is for this reason that we design, manufacture, mould and assemble our products in-house," he said.

"This has been an exciting development enabling us to compete favourably in the 52 export markets we currently trade in.

"Significant business development is now taking place in new markets such as Russia and South America," he said.

The 'Made by Britain' award is being led by the Associate Parliamentary Manufacturing Group (APMG), a group of cross-party MPs and Peers that works to raise the profile of British manufacturing and design.

All 650 MPs in Britain have been asked to nominate a product that is manufactured in their own constituency.
