More than 1,100 Belfast student accommodation rooms approved

Almost 1,200 student rooms have been given the green light, after two major developments in Belfast were awarded planning permission.

Belfast City Council voted that two developments in the city centre should go ahead.

That includes a 682-bedroom project at York Street by UK firm UniCiti, and an 11-storey management student building with 475 rooms, located on Great Patrick Street.

But three others were refused due to a number of reasons.

That included outline planning permission for a large 408-bedroom development close to Library Street.

Planners said it was of a “scale which is unacceptable”.

Outline planning for a development at Carrick Hill was also turned down, along with a small 21-bedroom conversion to student accommodation close to the Central Library.

There were 7,500 student rooms planned for Belfast, across 16 separate developments.

Many are predicting an influx of Ulster University student over the next two years, as it moves the bulk of its Jordanstown courses to Belfast.

According to two studies, and developer UniCiti — which last night go approval for its 590-bedroom development — even if all 7,500 managed beds were approved, it would account for just 23% of available student beds, a lower proportion than many other cities.
