Netflix wanted to buy hit former BBC show The Great British Bake Off, its boss has said.

The show, which features Northern Ireland man Andrew Smyth, was snapped up by Channel 4 in a deal reportedly worth around £75m.

Chief content officer of streaming service Netflix, Ted Sarandos, told the Radio Times: "We knew it was brewing, but I didn't actually think it would happen," replying, "Yes, yes" when asked if he thought they had been "slow off the mark".

Holywood man Andrew Smyth will compete in the final of the show tomorrow night. He's the son of ex-CBI director Nigel Smyth, who has been replaced by Angela McGowan.
