New jobs promised in wholesaler's £6m expansion plans

A Newry based wholesale distributor has announced a £6m expansion plan that will deliver 50 new high value jobs and create opportunities for future growth.

Savage and Whitten, based at Carnbane Industrial Estate in the town, said it is set to roll out a further 25 new Today Symbol stores across Northern Ireland in the next three months, bringing its total number of stores to 60 by July. The investment was supported by Northern Bank.

Formed in 2000, the family-run firm is a wholesale distributor of grocery, confectionery, soft drinks and catering supplies. The expansion will see it double its office, warehouse and distribution capacity to 48,000 sq ft and its catering arm, Independent Catering Services will now operate from a 26,000 sq ft site.

The company has seen its business grow 20% in the last five years and expects turnover to hit £50m by the end of the year.

Managing director Mark Windebank said: "The jobs created and those filled in the coming weeks will require highly skilled people which ensures we continue to make an important contribution to the economy. Our ambitions for significant growth will be driven by the talent of our sales and management team."
