Gas company Phoenix will today announce plans to extend its natural gas network into 13 towns in east Co Down. The company already has more than 300,000 homes and businesses in greater Belfast on its network.

Now it has applied to the Utility Regulator to increase its licence to extend the natural gas to another 25,000 potential customers in Annahilt, Ballygowan, Ballynahinch, Castlewellan, Crossgar, Downpatrick, Dromore, Drumaness, Dundrum, Hillsborough, Newcastle, Saintfield and The Spa.

Michael McKinstry, chief executive of Phoenix, said: "Having delivered the successful roll-out of the natural gas network in greater Belfast over the last 20 years, we feel that we have demonstrated the necessary skills and expertise to lead the expansion of the natural gas network to these important areas.

"This development will ensure that many more homes and businesses benefit from a modern fuel that delivers economic, social and environmental benefits".

Rival firmus energy also supplies Belfast and the 'ten towns' network of Antrim, Ballymena, Londonderry, Newry, Armagh, Banbridge, Craigavon, Ballymoney, Coleraine and Limavady.
