Pinewood Studios, home to James Bond and Star Wars, is expanding into China as it looks to capitalise on growing demand in the "flourishing Chinese film industry" for its services.

The group, which is set to be acquired by Aermont Capital for £323 million, said it has opened a representative office in Beijing, headed up by Amanda Halliday.

Andrew Smith, president of Pinewood China, said: "Pinewood has been working in China for a number of years and we have forged some strong relationships with film companies, content producers and games developers.

"A permanent presence in China is a key strategic element of Pinewood's overall international strategy."

Pinewood said its expertise in the fields of studio design and build, production services, content development, marine services and training were in high demand in the country.

The firm added that it already provides consultancy services to a number of Chinese film companies.

Karen Bradley, Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport, pounced on the news.

"Pinewood is one of our most iconic brands and, building on the recent state visit to the UK by Chinese president, Xi Jinping, I'm delighted to see Pinewood further expanding its presence in the international market," she said.

In July, Pinewood said the plunge in sterling following Britain's decision to quit the European Union would give it a boost, adding that the impact of Brexit would be "largely mitigated" as its most significant customers are based in the US.
