Portview Fit-Out adds to bakery chain's recipe for more success

By Clare Weir

A Belfast fit-out firm has carried out work for an upmarket bakery chain in London with a deal worth around £200,000.

Hummingbird Bakery, which has six premises in London specialising in cupcakes, hired Portview to work on stores in Richmond, Islington, Notting Hill and Spitalfields.

And the bakery has not ruled out an expansion into Northern Ireland.

The latest seven-week project at the Richmond store was completed last November, with the central London location posing some interesting challenges for the workforce, with an all-important cooker having to be fitted in advance of any construction work to the old building.

Sean McEvoy, contracts director at Portview Fit-Out, said that the refurbishment included stripping out the premises over two floors, rebuilding internal walls as well as redesigning and installing a new layout, seating, electrics, air conditioning, ventilation and decoration.

"There were restrictions on access and delivery times due to the central London location," he said.

"We also had to fit the cooker before any of the major work could begin, as the only access was through a very small staircase to the basement."

Colin Rendell, operations director at Hummingbird Bakery, which also has branches in South Kensington and Soho, praised the work of the Northern Ireland firm.

"They are very dedicated to each project they work on and provide quality workmanship every time," he said.

"We know when Portview Fit-Out take on a job to expect a five-star finish to the bakery outlets with total commitment and a professional approach at all times from the team. They are good communicators and will go the extra mile to facilitate the precise details and features we require at our businesses."

Meanwhile, a spokeswoman for the bakery chain told the Business Telegraph: "We currently have six branches in London and two, soon to be three, in Dubai, as such we are looking at other urban areas in the UK for potential opportunities to grow the business."

In April, Hummingbird's rival bakery chain Patisserie Valerie revealed plans to open up to nine shops in Northern Ireland.

Paul May, the chief executive of parent company Patisserie Holdings, said the firm had already been eyeing up premises in Belfast's Corn Market, which could open within the next year.
