Premier Inn expansion set to create 60 new jobs
Up to 60 jobs will be created in Londonderry as part of a rapid expansion of budget hotel chain Premier Inn.
A recruitment drive by owner Whitbread, which also owns Costa coffee and the Beefeater and Brewers Fayre restaurants, is set to create 10,000 jobs across the UK over the next three years. The plan includes staffing a new hotel and Brewers Fayre outlet at Crescent Link in the Waterside area of Derry.
A spokeswoman said that about 50-60 jobs will be created when the premises opens next January.
The group has created 2,500 jobs over the past year and intends to recruit a further 10,000 staff in the UK and Ireland by early 2015.
It has plans for 10,000 Premier Inn rooms and will continue the aggressive expansion of Costa, which has increased its UK store numbers by 158 to 1,375 over the past year.
The initial plans for the Derry hotel were announced last Autumn.
The 60-bedroom hotel, which will be accompanied by a branded restaurant seating 200 people, is part of a mixed use development by Orana Group at Crescent Link in the city.
Premier Inn said it would make a £6m investment in the city's economy. The hotel is due to open in time for the City of Culture celebrations in 2013.
Meanwhile, a £1.5m expansion at a Premier Inn in Lisburn has been completed.
The expansion has added 30 new bedrooms to the property on Hillsborough Road, bringing the hotel's total number of bedrooms to 90 and increasing its ability to cater for large bookings.
The completion of the extension will create eight new jobs; five in housekeeping and three in the hotel's adjoining restaurant.
Premier Inn Lisburn opened in October 2009 and is Lisburn's only hotel. Growing demand over the last two years has resulted in an average occupancy rate of 85% and the need for expansion.
