Red tape choking R&D warns expert

Northern Ireland risks slipping behind other regions unless it gets rid of red tape and invests in research, development and innovation, a top academic has claimed.

Director of the Engineering Research Institute at the University of Ulster Professor James McLaughlin told an audience of MLAs, academics, investors and public administrators at Stormont this week that Northern Ireland's innovation community is operating below par.

Mr McLaughlin said that while there is excellent work being done in universities and at the Northern Ireland Science Park, levels of research and development investment is among the UK's lowest.
