Ryanair flies back to high street with a pop-up shop

Ryanair has made its first venture on to the high street in over a decade by opening a pop-up retail shop in Manchester.

The airline hopes to open similar shops in Spain and Italy if the venture takes off in the UK.

Ryanair spokesman Stephen McNamara said the airline decided to undertake some "guerrilla marketing" by opening the store. Ryanair had rented the shop space for four weeks after it became available at, unsurprisingly, a cheap price, he said.

In the shadow of the Rodwell Tower - one of Manchester's tallest buildings - the retail unit was previously occupied by a florist. There is also a travel agents next door.

While Manchester Airport has supported the store, Mr McNamara said the bill for the frugally-decorated outlet is being footed by Ryanair.

If the new venture comes up smelling of roses, Mr McNamara said the concept could be replicated in some other countries.

"It might be something we'd consider in Spain and Italy for instance, but the brand is so well established in Ireland it's unlikely we'd open one here," he said.

Ryanair had a retail outlet in Dublin that closed well over a decade ago as its push to develop online sales gathered pace.

Mr McNamara said Ryanair's Manchester base opened a year ago and it wanted to promote the range of routes it operates from the city. Pedestrians are being lured with the chance of winning free tickets.
