Simply Be, Jacamo and JD Williams retailer revenues slip during 'transition'
The retailer behind home shopping brands Simply Be, Jacamo and JD Williams said revenues were lower in the first half of a "transitional" year in which it significantly reduced the weight of direct mail.
Manchester-based N Brown cut marketing investment in catalogues by 24%, leaving revenues 3.2% lower in the second quarter and 0.6% across the half year to August 30.
Its spending has moved into customer recruitment, particularly online, and been rephased towards the second half of the year in order to adjust to the way that customers now shop.
JD Williams brand sales were down 3% in the half but new customers are up 20% for this season to date. Simply Be and Jacamo fashion ranges rose 4% and 10% respectively. A new SimplyBe and Jacamo store will open on London's Oxford Street today and three outlets due before Christmas will take its portfolio to 14.
In July, television host Lorraine Kelly became a brand ambassador for JD Williams, with model Kelly Brook taking on the role for Simply Be.
