A COMPANY has shown its mettle by providing the raw material for a sword which no doubt brought a TV character's life to a bloody and gory end – in Game of Thrones.

Metalweb in Kilkeel, which opened recently bringing 18 new jobs to the Co Down area, provided the material for the sword for the cult series, which is part-filmed in Northern Ireland.

The sword, which was hewn by operatives at Craigavon's Boyce Engineering, took pride of place at Metalweb's official opening last Saturday, performed by South Down MP Margaret Ritchie.

Metalweb's headquarters is in Birmingham and its new location in Kilkeel was located to serve the growing demand for its metal stocks, aluminium and steel.

Managing director Bruce Maggs said Kilkeel is an "ideal location".

"It was important to identify facilities easily accessible to both Northern Ireland and Eire. This proximity means we're ideally placed to provide fast turnaround for Irish customers," he said.

Cutting the ceremonial ribbon marking its opening Mrs Ritchie said the workforce boasted "a strong entrepreneurial spirit".

The sword is now on show in Kilkeel but will soon be returned to Boyce which will put it on display in its Magheralin factory.
