Tesco grows supermarket share in Northern Ireland
Tesco is continuing to grow its share of the Northern Ireland supermarket business, fresh industry figures show. The market leader here saw a 2.2% increase on overall spending in its stores in the 52 weeks to the end of January, based on the same period a year earlier.
The chain, which has around 50 stores here, now has 34.7% of the grocery market here, according to Kantar Worldpanel.
Meanwhile Lidl, which still has just a fraction of the overall market, saw a small rise in spending. The German discounter, which has 38 stores here, now has a 5.2% share of the market.
But Sainsbury's saw its share fall from 17.7% to 17.2% in the last 12 months. Rival Asda has now moved into second place, with 17.4% of the food, alcohol, household, health and beauty products sold here. Elsewhere, the other multiples saw an overall drop of 3.1% in overall sales during the same period.
Meanwhile, Tesco is to check the prices of all items in each of its stores, after an investigation discovered that customers were being short-changed on promotions.
An undercover reporter for BBC Inside Out was overcharged on multi-buy offers at two-thirds of stores visited.
The reporter was charged more than expected in 33 out of 50 stores visited, because promotions marked on the shelves were out of date and no longer valid at the tills.
Multi-buy deals were still being advertised on the shelves months after they had expired in some cases.
Martin Fisher from the Chartered Trading Standards Institute said the errors could break the law by falling foul of the the Consumer Protection from Unfair Trading Regulations 2008, according to the BBC.
The supermarket giant will now re-evaluate the price of every item at its 3,500-plus stores across the UK.
German discounter Aldi has overtaken the Co-operative to become the fifth largest grocer in the UK.
Aldi's sales rose 12.4% year-on-year in the 12 weeks to January 29, taking its market share to 6.2%, ahead of the Co-op's 6%, data from Kantar Worldpanel shows.
The past quarter saw Aldi attract 826,000 more shoppers than during the same period last year, underpinned by an extensive programme of store openings.
Supermarket sales overall were up 1.7% on last year, with eight of the nine major retailers seeing growth over the quarter.
Kantar said supply issues affecting fresh produce over the last few weeks had affected sales.
