UK criminal screening service acquired by outsourcing firm

BY CLARE WEIR

An outsourcing company with a large technology hub in Northern Ireland has acquired a criminal records checking service.

MITIE, headquartered in Bristol but with a base in Lurgan, has bought UKCRBs, one of the UK's largest providers of online criminal records checking services.

The business will be integrated into MITIE's existing employee screening offering 'PeopleCert' and will enhance criminal record checking capabilities, improve turn-around times, and expand MITIE's technology platform.

MITIE says that UKCRBs customers will also benefit from access to a wider range of services. The combined business has over 600 customers in health, financial services, education, communications and local authority sectors and the service will continue to be supported by MiTec, MITIE's technology hub in Northern Ireland.

Ruby McGregor-Smith CBE, MITIE's chief executive, said that the acquisition will significantly enhance the services that the firm offers to customers.

"The acquisition offers synergies with our existing security business and will allow us to bid for larger scale screening and vetting contracts." she said.

The UK outsourced screening and vetting market is estimated to be worth around £85m per year and growing.

MITIE'S Co Armagh facility is described as the most advanced non-military installation in the UK, providing remote monitoring of CCTV and alarm systems, vehicle tracking, lone worker support, helpdesks and screening and vetting services.

The centralised communications hub is the first of its kind in the UK and will monitor banks, corporate offices, business parks and transport hubs across the UK, with the capability to reach as far away as the US and New Zealand.

Clients include Rolls-Royce, UBS and Marks & Spencer.
