Co Armagh chilled haulage company Sawyers has been acquired by the major US merchants group AGRO.

Sawyers, which is based in Lurgan, distributes chilled goods around Ireland, Britain and Europe, and employs 93 people.

The family company will continue to be operated locally following the takeover, which was for an undisclosed sum.

Sawyers managing director Derek Sawyers said the firm was "proud" to join the AGRO Group. "Their business philosophy and hands-on approach will allow our team to continue to focus on customer responsiveness and quality of service," he added.

Carlos Rodriguez, president of AGRO Merchants Group Europe, said: "Sawyers is a family-owned business with an impressive drive, outstanding culture and customer service focus."

Sawyers has operations in Moy, Ballygawley and in Swords, Co Dublin. AGRO already owns the Castlecool distribution firm in Castleblayney, Co Monaghan.
