Major US stock indexes have ended slightly lower after early gains faded away.

Financial and technology stocks saw the biggest declines on Friday, outweighing gains in smaller sectors like utilities and real estate companies.

Trading was relatively quiet as six industry sectors in the Standard & Poor's 500 index rose and five fell.

The S&P 500 slipped four points, or 0.2%, to 2,258.

The Dow Jones industrial average dropped nine points, or 0.1%, to 19,843. The Nasdaq composite lost 19 points, or 0.4%, to 5,437.

The yield on the 10-year Treasury note held steady at 2.60%.
