Downloads drowning out His Master's Voice

Published 06/04/2011

It's a store we all grew up with and one which has been an institution on the high street for years. But, like Woolworths, nothing is safe these days.

His Master's Voice reported its third profit warning yesterday, four weeks before the end of its financial year.

Our growing habit of buying music and films online has been blamed and has seen the company's share price tumble by two-thirds over the last year. For someone who can only bring himself to buy music on CD, it would be really sad to see poor old HMV disappear.

While it might not have been able to benefit from the move to online sales as well as some of its rivals, there's still something special about being able to go to a 'record' shop which has a wide range of choice to browse through on a quiet lunchtime.
