Rory McIlroy's a big hitter when it comes to Twitter
Rory McIlroy isn't just a global hit on the fairways - he's also the top golfer on Twitter, according to new research.
While tournaments and winnings decide who is regarded as the best - Rory has dropped from first to third in the world rankings in recent months - the Co Down star's internet influence is second to none.
HookIt - an online platform that quantifies and tracks the value and performance of sponsorships - has revealed that McIlroy is top of the leaderboard when it comes to PGA Tour tweeting. And ironically, that may be because the four-time Major winner had more time on his hands due to an ankle injury he sustained while enjoying a kickabout with his mates.
HookIt carried out an analysis of every PGA Tour pro's social media accounts to find out who had gained the most influence after the 2014-2015 season.
And it discovered that McIlroy led the rest of the field by a wide margin. McIlroy had 5.9 million likes, comments, retweets or shares across his social-media channels, Golf Digest reported.
That was more than double Rickie Fowler's score in second place with 2.5 million.
McIlroy's big rival Jordan Spieth had 1.7 million, Bubba Watson was on 1.3 million and Justin Rose had 789,400. After his Masters win Spieth was hot property on Google, earning him more than three times the number of searches that McIlroy had at the time.
When it comes to followers however, Rory loses out to Tiger Woods. The Holywood golfer has 4.3 million, while Woods is the undisputed king with almost 8.3 million.
Rory has used social media accounts to keep in touch with fans, but it all adds value to 'Brand McIlroy', as sponsors attach themselves to players with the most clout.
