In April last year, Japan Tobacco acquired Gallaher Group plc, a transaction which brought together the third and fifth largest tobacco companies respectively in the world.

The company makes cigarettes for the UK market at Lisnafillan and also produces Virginia blended cigarettes for export. The 50- acre site also houses a pipe and roll-your-own tobacco factory and some research and development facilities.

Last year the company announced plans to transfer the manufacture of domestic cigar products to Lisnafillan, creating up to 95 new jobs and investing a further £50m into Northern Ireland. The company was founded in 1857 by Tom Gallaher when he opened a small tobacco business in Londonderry.
