AES (NI) is essentially Kilroot power station which generates around 25% of the province’s power consumption. The company has added small numbers to its workforce in recent years and increased its turnover, although its profit has fallen in each of the last three years. It is part of the AES Corporation, a US-based global power company. When AES made its first move outside of its home base in the United States, AES acquired AES Kilroot in 1992. A 520 MW dual oil/coal-fired plant located near Belfast, AES Kilroot is the second largest power plant in Northern Ireland, powering approximately 10% of the country’s grid. Kilroot’s long term supply contract extends to 2024 and dates back to the privatisation in 1992 of the province’s electricity industry.
