15. Dunnes Stores

Managing Director: Frank Dunne

Employment: 2,342

Turnover: £177.9m

Pre-tax profit: £26.3m

The retailer was founded by Northern Ireland-born Ben Dunne in 1944, initially as a clothing retailer, with groceries introduced in the 1960s.

As well as 116 stores in the south, the company has 23 stores in Northern Ireland, 11 in Great Britain and five in Spain. The trading results for the stores in the UK are consolidated in Dunnes Stores (Bangor) Ltd

The first store in Northern Ireland opened in 1971. It opened its first store in Spain in 1980 and has since opened four more.

In January 2010, Dunnes was ranked 231st among the world’s top 250 retailers in an annual survey published by Deloitte.

The company is still run by the Dunne family, primarily two of the founder’s children, Frank Dunne and Margaret Heffernan.

One of the most senior executives at Dunnes Stores, Sheena Forde, left the retailer in January 2012. Ms Forde, who was head of buying at the business, only joined the company in 2010 and had been headhunted from fellow Irish retailer Superquinn, where she was operational and development director.
