Part of the Royal Bank of Scotland (RBS) Group, Ulster Bank is a retail and commercial bank operating across the island of Ireland. Ulster Bank serves the 1.9 million customers through an extensive branch, business centre and ATM network with online and mobile banking channels.

Ulster Bank said it continues to support lending across Northern Ireland for both its business and personal customers. Leveraging its international capabilities, Ulster Bank, in association with SmallBusinessCan, launched a series of ‘Business Live’ events across the island of Ireland to help local SMEs explore and capitalise on their potential to do business outside their home market.

In early 2012 Ulster Bank announced a total of 950 job losses. The bank said it’s taking the action as part of its overall business strategy to ensure the business is well placed to continue to compete effectively.

Profits continue to be dented by a property-laden loan book, which has meant it’s had to set aside money to protect against bad debts — impairment charges — over the last few years. In 2011, impairment charges across the island of Ireland reached £1.4bn.
