30. Rotary Group

Chief executive: Phill Laidlaw

Employment: 1,500

Turnover: £186.9m

Pre-tax profit: £5.5m

The Rotary Group specialises in contracting for heating, ventilating and air-conditioning systems and is a leading provider of integrated mechanical and electrical building services.

It is a Northern Ireland registered engineering company which, in 2008, was sold by the local shareholders in the Jennings family and acquired by the large Australian-owned Hastie Group.

The multi-million pound merger saw the newly combined group listed in Australia, with the Jennings family, which owns Rotary, as the largest individual shareholder. Both companies continue to trade under their own names.

Rotary operates throughout the UK, Ireland and overseas, completing projects in over 35 countries across the world, including the Middle East, Hong Kong and former Soviet Union states.

Employment in the group fell sharply in 2008 but has since fluctuated around a lower figure, averaging 1,500 employees in 2010 and 2011.
